  26.                     INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

  29. To install the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet III, IIID driver:
  30.  
  31.  
  32.     1.    If you already have a LaserJet III printer installed, skip
  33.         to step 2.  If you do not have a LaserJet III currently
  34.         installed, you must first follow the standard Windows driver
  35.         installation procedure and install the LaserJet III driver,
  36.         HPPCL5A.DRV, that came with Windows 3.0.
  37.  
  38.     2.    Use DOS or the Windows 3.0 File Manager to copy the new
  39.         PCL5 / HP LaserJet III driver files from the driver disk
  40.         to your WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.   These files are named:
  41.             HPPCL5A.DRV
  42.             HPPCL5A.HLP
  43.  
  44.  
  45.     NOTE:    Everyone installing this driver needs to perform the
  46.         following steps to update their WIN.INI file to support
  47.         the new printer features.
  48.  
  49.     3.    From the Windows 3.0 Main Menu, run the Control Panel and
  50.         select Printers.
  51.  
  52.         Select Configure.  If you are installing a new
  53.             printer, highlight the appropriate connection in
  54.             the Ports list.
  55.  
  56.         Select Setup.  If you are installing a new printer,
  57.             make any changes necessary to reflect your printer
  58.             configuration.
  59.  
  60.             NOTE:  If you are installing a LaserJet IIID printer,
  61.             you will highlight the LaserJet IIID printer in the
  62.             Printer list.
  63.  
  64.         Click on OK to exit the Setup menu.  This is necessary to
  65.             update your WIN.INI file with information about
  66.             the new driver features.
  67.  
  68.         Click on OK to exit the Printers-Configure menu.
  69.  
  70.         Select the Active button to make this your active printer.
  71.  
  72.         If the Default Printer box does not list your active printer
  73.         as the default printer,    double click on the highlighted
  74.         printer.
  75.  
  76.         Click on OK to exit the Printers menu.
  77.  
  78.         Exit the Control Panel.
  79.  
  80.         Your LaserJet III printer driver is now installed.

  87. The Hewlett-Packard LaserJet III, IIID Printer Driver (filename HPPCL5A.DRV)
  88. version 3.61 contains the following features:
  89.  
  90.   *  Support for the LaserJet IIID printer, including access to
  91.      dual paper trays and duplexing (two-sided printing).
  92.  
  93.      From Control Panel, Printers, Configure, Setup click on Printer at
  94.      the top of the screen, click on HP LaserJet IIID.  To select multiple
  95.      paper bins, click on Paper Source and select Upper Tray, Lower Tray,
  96.      Automatic, Envelope, or Manual Feed.  Click on Options to select
  97.      Duplexing Short Edge binding or Long Edge binding.
  98.  
  99.   *  Support of two new Hewlett-Packard scalable typeface cartridges:
  100.  
  101.        Brilliant Presentations I/Compelling Publications II
  102.        Distinctive Documents I/Compelling Publications I
  103.  
  104.        The cartridges can be selected from the cartridge list in the
  105.        Printer Setup dialog box.  Each cartridge font is available in
  106.        the Windows ANSI (WN) symbol set, with the exception of Zapf
  107.        Dingbats, which is available in the following symbol sets:
  108.        Series 100 (D1), Series 200 (D2), Series 300 (D3), and
  109.        Postscript (DS).
  110.  
  111.   *  Support of the Hewlett-Packard WordPerfect bitmapped font cartridge.
  112.  
  113.   *  Faster printing of graphics.
  114.  
  115.        In 386 mode, the speed of printing graphics has been
  116.        significantly improved for applications that use metafiles.
  117.        The speed of printing bitmaps has not been affected.
  118.  
  119.   *  Ability to use reverse type (white text on solid rectangles).
  120.  
  121.     NOTE:  Only square cornered solid-filled rectangles work for reverse
  122.            type.
  123.  
  124.        To print white text in PageMaker, you must select the Fast Rules
  125.        option in the Print screen before clicking the OK button.
  126.  
  127.   *  Support for changing print direction on a single page in
  128.      90 degree increments (0, 90, 180, 270 degrees).
  129.  
  130.   *  Two graphic appearance selections -- Gray Scale Graphics
  131.      "on" or "off" --
  132.  
  133.        The Printer Setup dialog box in the Windows Control Panel
  134.        allows you to choose Gray Scale Graphics.
  135.  
  136.        For an improved photographic appearance, turn on Gray Scale
  137.        Graphics.  Your images will have smooth, soft looking contrasts
  138.        between shades of gray.  Images originally designed with color
  139.        will print better too.
  140.  
  141.        For images that have a "line draw" look, turn off Gray Scale
  142.        Graphics.  Though the fine details of line work will be
  143.        clear, the contrasts between shaded areas can appear harsh.
  144.  
  145.   *  A PageProtection menu now appears in the Printer Setup dialog box.
  146.  
  147.        NOTE:  The setting in the PageProtection menu in the Printer Setup
  148.        dialog box does not affect the printer's configuration, but only
  149.        reflects it.  To change the PAGEPROTECT setting in the printer,
  150.        the printer's control panel must be used.
  151.  
  152.        Select the setting that corresponds to the printer's control panel
  153.        PAGEPROTECT setting.  This setting, in combination with the Memory
  154.        box setting, tells the printer driver how much of the memory available
  155.        in the printer is usable by the printer driver.
  156.  
  157.   *  Selection of envelope paper sizes.
  158.  
  159.   *  Help file updated.
  160.  
  161.   *  Changes to font symbol set references
  162.  
  163.        To provide WYSIWYG capabilities, user-selected symbol sets
  164.        are now printed as they are defined, instead of being
  165.        remapped or translated to the Windows ANSI set.  For
  166.        example, Roman-8 fonts now print according to the Roman-8
  167.        mapping, rather than Windows ANSI.
  168.  
  169.        In internal fonts, scalable cartridge fonts, and Type Director
  170.        scalable fonts, the symbol set appears as part of the font name
  171.        in the application's font menu.  In these cases, the symbol set
  172.        is represented by a two character abbreviation in parentheses.

  177.        Where XX represents the two character symbol set code.

  186. of the Hewlett-Packard Windows Printer Driver.  These include:

  188.   *  Paper Size selections in Printer Setup are correct.
  189.  
  190.   *  Error 20 PRINT OVERRUN no longer occurs when printing a rule
  191.      around the page using PageMaker.

  198. Note the following information:

  200.   *  The ability to print reverse text on patterned rules or rounded
  201.      corners is not supported.

  203.   *  A to Z Font Cartridges

  205.      Traditional font support information (PCM files) are available by
  206.      calling Hewlett-Packard Distribution at (303) 353-7650.
  207.  
  208.   *  Pretty Faces Bitmapped Font Cartridge
  209.  
  210.      The PCM for Hewlett-Packard's new bitmapped font cartridge,
  211.      Pretty Faces, is included on the driver diskette.
  212.  
  213.   *  The PCM files for the A to Z and Pretty Faces cartridges are also
  214.      available on Compuserve.
